Abstract
Objective: To test the efficacy of ultrasonography-guided injection compared to blind injection in the subdeltoid bursa in patients with chronic subdeltoid bursitis.

Materials and Methods: Twenty-two patients with chronic subdeltoid bursitis were recruited and randomly divided into two groups. Patients in group 1 were treated with ultrasonography- guided injections and patients in group 2 were treated by blind injection. A mixture of 9.5 ml 0.5% lidocaine and 20 mg triamcinolone was injected. In all patients the range of motion, visual analog scale (VAS) and modified Constant scale were evaluated at the initial visit and at one and two weeks after the injection.

Results: Ultrasonography-guided injection resulted in a large decrease in the VAS (p£¼0.05) measurement and a significant increase in the modified Constant scale (p£¼0.01) value compared to blind injection, as determined in the follow-up checks at weeks 1 and 2. The total number of injections required to reduce pain and improve function was significantly smaller in the ultrasonography-guided injection group than in the blind injection group (p£¼0.05).

Conclusion: Ultrasonography-guided subdeltoid bursa injection rapidly reduces pain and improves shoulder function in patients with chronic subdeltoid bursitis and requires a lower frequency of injections than does blind injection.
